MAJOR CODE: 2046
The curriculum prepares students to function in the operating room by combining classroom instruction and campus laboratory instruction with actual surgical suite experience. Successful completion of the program prepares the graduate to take the National Certification Examination to become a certified surgical technologist (CST).
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission to the program, students must meet the following criteria:
- Complete UAFS admission requirements to include submission of official transcripts from all colleges/ universities attended.
- Have a minimum 2.25 GPA for all college course work (including transfer work and excluding developmental courses) and be in good academic standing.
- Complete required prerequisite courses for the program with a minimum grade of C or higher in each course prior to fall entry; prerequisite courses are the first two semesters as listed on the degree plan for a total of 28 hours
- Take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam. See the UAFS Testing Center TEAS webpage for information on the TEAS exam.
Application
Students who meet the above criteria are eligible to apply for admission. Applications can be found online and must be submitted by the date as determined by the program.
Selection
Selection is based on the successful completion of the admission criteria and is a highly competitive process. Those with higher GPAs on prerequisite courses and TEAS scores will rank higher in selection. The most qualified applicants will be contacted after the admission deadline for an interview.
Note: If applicants have identical ranking scores, priority will be given to the student with the highest cumulative GPA. The top 30 applicants, after application, will proceed to an interview.
Students admitted into the Surgical Technology Program must submit the following additional documentation before fall entry:
- Health Care Provider Statement/Medical Release form
- Proof of immunizations
- CPR Certification: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
- Criminal background check
- Drug screen
